Today we got our internet and cable connections hooked up in our new apartment in Toluca Lake. I think that was the longest stretch of time I've gone without an internet connection since I got my first e-mail address. I'm so dependent upon the internet, not just for entertainment, but for everyday things like looking for work and corresponding with my friends and family. It felt like living in a closet for a few weeks...though, of course, we've been living out of bags and boxes, so perhaps that's not entirely surprising. Still, I hadn't realized the depth of my internet addiction. I really felt pretty helpless, and having to go to the library to use their computers - especially since they weren't working for the first few days and you have to sign up and schedule a time to use them when they do work - increased my withdrawal symptoms.
Anyway, everything's up and running now, and it feels wonderful. It feels better than that, actually, since our new connection is super-fast, easily equaling the speed of my old connection at the art school. I can watch YouTube! I can download PDF files in less than an hour! I can e-mail scanned comics pages!
It also means I have to catch up on everyone's blogs...
Oh, and we got cable television, too, which will be the first time we've had that since, uh, ever. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out. If nothing else, we can watch television without having to adjust the rabbit ears or squint through static, like we did in Minneapolis. I'm not a big television watcher, but that'll still be nice for the few shows I do like to watch.
After a week of watching what can be seen via the antenna here, I have to conclude that Mexican television is pretty wacky and racy, but still not as weird as Japanese television.
